Microsoft’s Bing Maps, online mapping website formerly known as Live Search Maps, removed the beta label and added new Silverlight-based apps: Events and Destination Maps.

Events app monitors nearby shows and community events and mark them with the pins on the map. The name of the events also appear in the left-hand section of the interface and the user can scroll through them with the ability to sort events by popularity or date. It is also possible to filter events by dates or date range. The user pp also can narrow events search by categories such as food & dining, sports, music, arts, fairs, festivals etc.

Destination Maps app lets users create customized maps for use when planning an event. The app helps to create a customized and stylized map (ranging from a “back of the napkin” to a “treasure map” styles) which could be very useful and funny for party invites or directions. Destination Maps will make the directions more easier by showing mainly the route and major roads along the way.

Several weeks ago Google launched Google Maps Navigation as a cost-free feature of Google Maps for Android 2.0 devices. Since today Google Maps Navigation is also available for devices running Android 1.6 (aka Donut) and higher, such as the T-Mobile phones myTouch 3G and the G1. That means that every user of an Android phone and an other Android device obtain access to the application which enhances turn-by-turn navigation by merging GPS functionality with the popular features of Google Maps such as ‘Street View, ‘Satellite View’, searching for a specific business etc.

It’s a pity that some features of Android 2.0 will not work for an Android 1.6 device, f.e. the ability to use some voice commands, however Google Maps Navigation will offer you a variety of other useful features to help you get the right direction including live traffic data from the Internet, satellite view, street view and the ability to search for a new destination mid-route.

To get the new feature, visit the Android Marketplace from your mobile device and download the latest version of Google Maps.

Micello launches inside mapping platform

A Californian start-up company with the regional engineering office in Chennai, India, Micello, launches a new application that allows users to explore and navigate “inside” places of interest using an iPhone. The company pitchmen call it “Google Maps Inside A Building”.

A new mapping platform for the indoor world takes you inside malls, resorts, stadiums, and other complex indoor spaces. The application also allow users search for some store in a mall. It also integrates online social networks, what could be useful for planning a social event or meeting. Micello plans to bring maps of more than 150 locations online this fall. The execs say it takes just a few hours to create an “inside” map, incorporating crowd-sourced data from the users.

Micello wish to add about 10 maps per day. Now they are focusing on the Bay Area, but the platform will expand to other areas. It will also add some features like helping you find your car, as well as directing you from one store to another in a mall. The application is free as the company plans will make money through advertising and promotions.
